Ovens have been found in Europe dating back to 29,000 B.C., used to cook Mammoth. Moving forward a few thousand years, in Egypt ovens were used to cook food and make bricks. By the middle ages, ovens had become large fireplaces utilizing large cauldrons similar to Dutch ovens. After the middle ages, ovens underwent several generational changes, from wood burning to coal and ultimately to gas and electric. Each generation going through several design changes to improve their efficiency and utility, such as the addition of fire chambers in wood burning ovens that allowed for the containment and release of smoke, and chimneys to direct smoke out of the home.
By the beginning of the 19th Century, as gas lines to homes became available, gas stoves and ovens became more common. The gas oven continued to evolve through the 19th, and 20th centuries, adding modern features as it went, such as enamel coatings for ease of cleaning, and thermostats for precise temperature control. Electric ovens were invented in the latter parts of the 19th century but became commonplace after reliable electrical power was available in all cities and towns, with mass production and ownership after the second world war.
Today, ovens are available in many styles, colors, and with a seemingly endless supply of options and features, although still mainly relying on either gas or electrical power for cooking. With many modern ovens utilizing electronic controls for precision and efficiency, the humble oven has taken its place at the center of the modern 21st century kitchen.
