Fredrick Louis Maytag, the son of German immigrants, along with his two brothers-in-law, and George W. Parsons, formed the Parsons Band-Cutter & Self Feeder Company in 1893, each having invested $600. By 1902, the company was the largest manufacturer of feeders, and by 1904, the "Ruth" was the most popular model. Shortly after the turn of the century, the farming equipment line was expanded to include hay pressers, numerous specialized feeders, and harvesting equipment, even briefly producing a line of automobiles under the name Maytag-Mason, as well as tractors. Around this time, F.L. Maytag had taken sole control of the company, and changed the name to the Maytag Company.

Hoping to fill the seasonal slump in sales of farming equipment, Maytag started manufacturing washing machines in 1905. The "Pasttime" washing machine had a wooden tub, and a hand crank that turned a dolly inside with wooden pegs that pulled clothing through the water and against the corrugated tub sides. Soon after, a pulley was added to the design so that the unit could be operated from an outside power source such as a tractor or windmill, and in 1911, Maytag unveiled the first washing machine with an electric motor. In 1915, Maytag developed a gasoline engine for powering their washing machines in rural areas that did not have access to electricity.

In 1919, Maytag became the first company to produce the "Washer that could not be built". Considered a seemingly impossible feat at the time, Maytag created an aluminum washing tub which was significantly superior to the wooden tubs of the past, and eliminated the shortcomings of wooden tubs such as leaks, and rot.

In 1922, Maytag revolutionized the washing machine industry with the advent of a vaned agitator mounted in the bottom of the aluminum washing tub, forcing water through the clothes, rather than dragging them through the water. Invented by Howard Snyder, a former mechanic who became the head of Maytag's development department, the new design called the "Gyrafoam" became the company's greatest success to date, and by the end of 1922, the Maytag Company was exclusively an appliance company. By 1924, one of every 5 washing machines sold was a Maytag, and in 1927, Maytag set a world record by dispatching 8 train loads of Maytag washers, the largest single shipment of merchandise, having products over a million washers.

After devoting their manufacturing facilities to the war effort, Maytag reentered the appliance industry in 1946, manufacturing washers, as well as selling ranges and refrigerators. They added dishwashers and food waste disposers in the 1960's, and by the mid-1980's had a full line of major home appliances. Today, Maytag is a part of the Whirlpool Corporation, along with its family of brands including JennAir, Hoover, and Admiral, but continues building on its history of innovation.
