Hotpoint Appliance Repair
The Pacific Electric Heating Company was founded in 1906, by Earl Richardson. While working as a plant superintendent at a power company, Earl Richardson developed a small lightweight electric iron. The heating elements of the iron converged at a point, and so the Hotpoint iron was born, from which the company derived its name. The Hotpoint Electric Heating Company was formed in 1911. In 1912, the company began manufacturing electric irons, and electric cookers in 1919. Earl Richardson went on to invent the first iron that switched itself off automatically when a preset maximum temperature is reached.
While Earl Richardson was developing his iron, George A. Hughes, a former journalist from Iowa, was experimenting with an electric range. The first model was very crude, with simple wires set in clay bricks, that would burn out after only a few hours use. After a few years or trial and error, the first electric cooktop was born, and would revolutionize the way people cooked in their homes.
Hotpoint lays claim to the invention of the first electric toaster in 1908, known as the El Toasto, which would go on to be one of the most popular brands of toaster in the US, at that point marketed under the Hotpoint brand. In 1918, Richardson and Hughes joined forces, and merged their companies with General Electric Company. By 1927, the Hotpoint Electric Heating Company was a wholly owned subsidiary of General Electric, and most production moved to General Electric's Appliance Park in Louisville, KY by the 1950's, where the majority of the brands appliances continue to be manufactured today.
Hotpoint is credited with several industry firsts, including the first all-white enameled electric range in 1924, the first "moistureless" clothes dryer in 1950, the first refrigerator on wheels designed to make it easier to clean behind the unit in 1953, the first low-speed agitation clothes washer allowing for automatic washing of delicate clothing in 1963, and the first 90 Day Replacement Guarantee of Satisfaction in 1960.
