Hood Service and Repair

Ventilation hoods, range hoods, kitchen hoods or exhaust hoods have been present in kitchens since cooking moved indoors. What started, in most cases, as a chimney or opening in the ceiling has advanced significantly over the last couple of centuries. Vent hoods have become an essential part of the modern kitchen, or any small space in which cooking takes place.

The invention of the modern hood can largely be attributed to the origins of the modern range. In the 1790's, Count Rumford, a prolific inventor, developed improvements to chimneys, fireplaces, and industrial furnaces. His invention, the Rumford fireplace, introduced the idea of restricting the chimney opening to increase the updraft. This invention created a streamlined airflow that channeled smoke up and out of the room, and was far more efficient than simply having a chimney to collect smoke.

The modern range hood, rather than using restricted airflow utilizes a fan or fans to create the updraft and exhaust airborne grease, fumes, smoke, heat, steam, and combustible materials. The fan works in combination with a skirt or capture panel to contain the rising gases, and generally a filter or filters to capture grease and odors. Hoods can largely be divided into two main categories, ducted or ductless, each with their own benefits and drawbacks.

Ducted range hoods, which are largely the most common, work in the way the name implies. The captured particles are are exhausted through a large duct out of the room, and almost always outside. Ducted hoods generally require less regular hood maintenance, and the need for regular filter replacement, which also avoids the problems of restricted airflow created by them. Ducted systems being the most common, are also the systems employed in commercial settings, although they are generally larger than their residential counterparts.

Ductless vent hoods are used in situations where a ducted system would be impractical or impossible to install. These hoods utilize bulky filters, often containing activated charcoal to filter odors and smoke particles, which need to be cleaned or replaced often. The air, heat and moisture filtered through the ductless hood is recirculated back into the room after being cleaned. The ductless vent hood requires regular cleaning, and hood maintenance, often in the form of cleaning or replacing filters, and due to the restrictive nature of the filters, are less efficient than ducted systems as they require larger fans to compensate for the filters.

The modern range hood is available in a variety of styles, over the range hood, under cabinet hood, canopy hood, or downdraft hood, and made out of a wide range of materials and in a wide range of colors. Exhaust hoods have also been incorporated into over-the-range microwaves, and almost always have some form of lighting built in. As with all modern appliances, hoods are now largely controlled by electronics, with sensors, and have the ability to connect to apps and computers via wifi or bluetooth. Hoods have become an integral part of the modern kitchen, often used as a focal point of design, but also an essential appliance, that when not functioning or in need hood service or hood repair, is greatly missed.
