Dryer Service and Repair

Drying clothes has been around as long as people have been washing clothes. Technological advancement past hanging clothes on a line and air drying came about largely around the same time as technology was applied to washing clothes. The first mass produced dryers were wringing units built onto washers that were powered by hand cranks, and then powered by electric motors. These units were slow, and after becoming powered, also dangerous.

The first tumble dryer was invented in France in 1800 by M. Pochon. The unit consisted of a metal cylinder with holes suspended over an open flame spun by a hand crank. While this process dried your clothes, it created other problems; your clothes often got singed, and always smelled of smoke. More than 100 years later, an inventor in North Dakota, J. Ross Moore, applied for and received patents for electric and gas dryers in the 1930's greatly improving on Pochon's design. His designs were sold to a manufacturing company, and the first models were released to the public in 1938. By 1947, various manufacturers were producing dryers of similar design with annual sales exceeding 60,000 units.

While there are numerous versions of dryers, the basic design hasn't changed since Pochon invented the tumble dryer. Since the late 1940's, manufacturers have focused on improving the speed, efficiency and safety of dryers. Today, dryers are equipped with sensors for moisture, digital or electronic controls, and high efficiency electric motors. The main difference between the most common dryers is the manner in which heat is generated; gas or electric.

Today, the dryer is available as a stand alone unit, front or top loading, stackable, built-in as part of a Laundry Center, and available in a range of colors and sizes. As with all modern appliances, manufacturers have been moving towards automation and many dryers are now capable of connecting to WiFi or bluetooth networks as well as being operated via computers or apps, and as with all modern appliances require regular dryer maintenance and dryer service.
