Dishwasher Service and Repair
There are only two ways two wash your dishes, manually, which is often a labor intensive process nobody really enjoys, or by using a dishwasher. Dishwashers, previously viewed as luxury items, can now be found in just about every home. No longer a luxury item, dishwashers are now mainstays of the modern kitchen, and as anyone who has had an issue with their dishwasher not working knows, quite an important part.
Dishwashers started as mechanical devices, driven by hand cranks, often made of wood which sprayed water onto dishes. The first mechanical dishwashing design was registered in 1850, with a second patent granted in 1865 using a similar design but had a hand cranked rack system. Both designs were impractical and inefficient, and neither was widely accepted. The most successful design of the hand cranked units was invented in 1886 by Josephine Cochrane and mechanic George Butters in Shelbyville, IL. Josephine, frustrated with the damage caused to her good china by her servants when washed by hand was looking for a way to protect her dishes.
In the United Kingdom, William Howard Livens invented a small, non-electric dishwasher that was well suited for domestic use in 1924 that incorporated most of the design elements still used today. The unit featured a front door for loading, a wire rack for dirty dishes and crockery, as well as a rotating sprayer, with a drying element added in later design models in 1940. Being the first unit suitable for domestic use, it came at a time when permanent plumbing and running water was becoming common in households, although the unit never saw much commercial success.
Dishwashers became commercially viable during the postwar boom of the 1950's, although initially only to wealthy households. Initially sold as standalone or portable devices, dishwashers began to be marketed with standardized shapes and sizes, and integrated under kitchen countertops, as wall-to-wall countertops and standardized cabinet heights became the norm.
Electric motor powered dishwashers became commonplace in the postwar period in the United States and Europe, with the first electrically powered domestically produced European units having been invented by Miele in 1929. By the 1970's, dishwashers had become commonplace in domestic residences in North America and Western Europe, with over 75% of homes in the United States and Germany having dishwashers by 2012.
Dishwashers, as much as any modern appliance, come in a wide range of colors, finishes, and with a wide range of options and features. The modern dishwasher, now far more efficient in the use of water and electricity through the use of sensors, and electronic controls, only runs as long as necessary to clean dishes, but also tend to see almost daily use in most households. Given the frequency with which dishwashers are used, more frequently than most appliances, also tend to require regular dishwasher maintenance. The more frequently regular dishwasher maintenance is preformed, the less likely one is to require dishwasher service or dishwasher repair.
